4. Research School for Forest Roads Design 

Founded: 1961

Head of research:

Mikhail Naskovets, PhD (Engineering), Associate Professor

Main areas of research:

– improvement of strength and resilience of road beds and road covers affected by weather and climate factors, improvement of viscoelastic properties of road construction materials, stabilization of soils with organic and mineral binding agents;

– design and construction of road beds and road dressing in terms of water and heat conditions and rheological properties of the construction materials used;

– study of ways to regulate the water and heat conditions of forest roads;

– improvement of bearing capacity of forest roads, use of geosynthetic materials and industrial waste, local construction materials and soils;

– study and justification of performance characteristics of logging road network and design development of temporary forest roads;

– justification of an optimum structure of forest transportation network in the context of sustainable forest use and timber harvest;

– development of forest road models and automation of their design.

– study of causes of large scale damage of forest and forest diseases; development of eliminating measures;

– comprehensive study of biological features of forest pests;

– study of physical and mechanical properties of local wood species and possible introducible species in the context of silvicultural and mensuration characteristics of a forest stand;

– study of wood degradation processes during biological destruction of timber;

11. Research School for Estimation of Properties of Polymer Materials and Development of Plastics, Fibres, Rubbers, Paint Coatings with Improved Resistance to Energy Fields and Corrosive Environments

Main areas of research:

– development of new polyimide materials, incl. adhesive and non-adhesive films, planarizing, sealing, insulating, protective systems and coatings, low-shrinking compounds, highly-effective thermostable membranes and other materials with special properties and improved processability;

– identification of dependencies of elastomer structure and properties upon the components and technological parameters throughout the process; industrial testing of elastomer compounds;

– study of joint effects of functionalized additive fillers and stabilizers on the properties of composite materials during recycling and performance;

– identification of relationship between the quality, multifunctional component proportion and properties of rubber in order to improve the performance of rubber products;  

– study of the relationship between the composition of oil residue-based compounds, their processing and output and quality of the target products (liquid fuel components, basic substances for petrochemistry), development of efficient ways of their disposal;

– properties control of finished products by a mathematical model of rotational moulding.

15. Research School for Chemical Processing of Wood

– development of new technologies for the production of pulp, paper, cardboard, chip and fibre boards, bioconversion and wood chemical processing by means of chemical conversion of wood components (lignin, hemicellulose, cellulose) to ensure resource-saving, energy saving and import substitution; 

– development of highly efficient chemical substances with functional properties (waterproof, hardening, flocculating, binding, peptizating, coagulating, structure-forming, rheological, etc.) and innovative technologies for their application in cellulose-containing polymer and composite materials;

– development of science-based resource-saving, energy-saving, import-substituting and environmentally safe technologies for chemical processing of wood;

– methodological approaches and technology concepts for improvement of the product quality, competitive growth and export capacity;
